Basically, HCG is a hormone produced by women during pregnancy and by young men during puberty. The theory behind this diet is that if you give someone small amounts of a symptom, it will cause the body to think it has the disease. Obviously, pregnancy is not a disease but the idea is that if you give the body pregnancy symptoms you can convince it of pregnancy. The desired result is that the body begins burning fat stores for energy in a manner similar to what occurs in pregnant women.

However, there are some widespread misconceptions about the diet and how it can be used to help individuals lose weight. These misconceptions include:  only women produce HCG, only the HCG injections work and not the HCG drops, and it is a great way for anyone to lose weight and get into shape.

Only Women Produce HCG – This is actually not the case. HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is produced by men as well, just not as often and you can’t trigger it with a pregnancy. Men produce HCG during puberty to help them develop their reproductive organs.

HCG Injections v HCG Drops – The reality here is that you can apply HCG sub-lingually (under the tongue) or via injection administered by a licensed doctor. There are pros and cons to each method but the fact is that both methods contain the same amount of HCG hormone.

It is Great for Anyone – This is actually not true at all. A HCG diet is intended for those who have 30 to 80 pounds to lose. It is not a long term diet option, it is not safe to do multiple times over the course of a few years and it should be considered carefully before you start it.

Is HCG right for you? This is a tough question that is best answered by asking yourself how serious you are about changing your lifestyle.
