Individuals new to plastic surgery may confuse a tummy tuck with liposuction, but the two, while both classed as cosmetic surgery, are very different medical procedures. Particularly, plastic surgery prices vary greatly depending on the technique being used, and the tummy tuck cost won’t be the same as the price for a belly fat liposuction procedure.
Safe to say, both procedures are similar in the sense that they are meant to eliminate excess fat and loose skin from the abdominal region. Far from being opposing processes the two can be used as complementary procedures, of course with at least a few months in between operations.
The techniques involved, however, differ with the two procedures. Liposuction involves the insertion of a tube through a small incision around the waist area (or any other body part for that matter) after which fat beneath the skin is sucked out. A tummy tuck removes excess fat by cutting off loose skin and tightening the abdominal wall.
Based on the methods used, it is easy to see that liposuction is recommended for localized area of fat in the body, not necessarily for the waist area only. Both are suitable for eliminating fat that simply won’t leave the body even with exercise and a healthy diet and neither is meant to be a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. As such, individuals who are so far above their ideal weight levels are not recommended for these procedures.
Who are the preferred candidates for these plastic surgery methods? Liposuction requires individuals with firm, elastic skin so older patients are advised to opt for the tummy tuck. In addition, the tummy tuck caters to individuals who wish to eliminate loose skin that resulted from drastic weight loss or pregnancy.
In terms of invasiveness, this is generally not performed as a non-invasive liposuction procedure. Liposuction usually entails a smaller incision, and is thus less painful. More bleeding and a longer recovery time are expected from tummy tuck procedures, as it requires larger incisions. For this reason, there is also a greater chance of complications with this method. In the end, though, liposuction may leave stretch marks. In such cases, an individual may opt for a follow-up tummy tuck procedure to fix this.
